Baran Çağinli is THE ARTIST selected for FIDA - residency program for visual artists in collaboration with FABRIKKEN in 2024.

Baran Çağinli is a Helsinki-based visual artist, whose works underline universal and global concerns by highlighting the problematics of, and contradictions of power, governmental conflicts, military systems, systematic repression, identity, and discrimination. Çağinli’s artistic practice encompasses various mediums, including photography, sculpture, installation, and archival material. He completed his master’s degree at the Academy of Fine Arts Helsinki in 2023.

The selection for the FIDA residency was made by FABRIKKEN and an external jury consisting of artists and curators. The jury’s motivation for choosing Çağinli reads as follows:

The art of Baran Çağinli brings together several disciplines and societal themes, which address governmental and civic conflicts of power, identity issues such as ethnic discrimination, forced migration, and forced disappearances. Çağinli’s subtle yet accessible treatment of his subjects enables him to treat current geopolitical inhumanities in and beyond the exhibition space but also, in his own words, to question the future consequences of past policies. The jury finds that FABRIKKEN and Copenhagen is a conducive context for the development of Çağinli’s work, and that the institution and the art scene will provide a productive framework for the artist.

FIDA is the Finnish Cultural Institute in Denmark’s residency program for visual artists, operated in collaboration with Fonden FABRIKKEN for Kunst of Design in Copenhagen. The purpose of the program is to build networks between professional artists on the contemporary Finnish and Danish art scenes, and to introduce Finnish or Finland-based artists to the Danish art market. In addition to an atelier at FABRIKKEN, a program will be built around networking activities locally in Copenhagen as well as across the country. During Çağinli’s residency, he will receive active curatorial support from Copenhagen-based curator Tijana Mišković. The residency will take place in August - September, 2024.
