FALLUCKA - Podcast

FALLUCKA, 2020, 2021

In spring 2020, to respond to the challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the network of Finnish Cultural and Academic Institutes launched Together Alone, an open open call for artistic projects. The aim of the open call was to help artists who had lost work opportunities due to the corona pandemic, as well as to encourage international collaboration without physical contact. All in all, 20 projects were commissioned. FALLUCKA - a podcast by Marie Caroline Schjeldal that works as a link between art lovers, artists, art fairs and galleries - has invited the independent curator and researcher, Irene Campolmi as a guest host for the podcast, and together they have chosen two Together Alone projects to do a podcast on. In the podcast we will learn more about how the artists behind these projects worked, as well as the challenges and opportunities they faced and are still facing because of COVID-19. The podcast consists of two episodes plus an intro episode.

In the intro episode, the premise of the podcast is introduced and Irene Campolmi tells a little about herself as well as why these two projects were chosen. Please listen to the intro before listening to Episode 1 and 2.

Episode 1 - Bodytalk by Simo Vassinen, Maria F. Scaroni & Roope Mokka

Episode 1 focuses on “Bodytalk“ by Simo Vassinen, Maria F. Scaroni & Roope Mokka - a project that investigates the crossing points and possible new unions of futures research with dance and physicality – with a specific zoom into rave and club culture. The quarantine time during the Covid-19 pandemic served as the first step in a long-term project which aims to better understand what role the body could play in imagining better futures. In terms of dance culture, the project looks specifically at the world of techno, raves and underground club culture: monotonous beats, prolonged repetition, dancing very literally ‘together alone’, stepping away from the everyday, losing one’s ego for the common good. The project’s overall aims include sharing knowledge from club culture, contemporary dance practices and other forms of intuitive physicality that deserve a wider reach than their often marginalised position. Why? To emphasise that the body is all the more crucial in a digitalised world and a possible missing link in societal discussions, and that artistic and physical practices can provide well-needed tools for critical thinking, empathy and dialogue.

Besides hearing about the background of the project, there is also a small exercise at the end of the episode.

Episode 2 - DEMO / Contagion by Pekka Airaxin, Caterina Avataneo & Felice Moramarco

In Episode 2, FALLUCKA’s guest host Irene Campolmi will take you through the creation of the project DEMO in dialogue with some of the creators; Catarina Avataneo & Felice Moramarco. DEMO / Contagion is an online moving image festival that took place 15 June - 24 July 2020. The aim of the festival was to address the topic of Contagion through a series of works by moving image artists and researchers. Taking the current Covid-19 crisis as a starting point, the notion of Contagion was explored as an aesthetic and political paradigm. A series of screenings, newly commissioned special projects, and a reader was presented on DEMO’s online platform.

Screenings: Ana Vaz & Tristan Bera: A Film, Reclaimed;  Jenna Sutela: Holobiont; Zoe Williams & Amy Gwatkin: Sunday Fantasy; Emilia Tapprest: Sonzai Zone; Everlane Moraes: Pattaki; Karrabing Film Collective: The Mermaids, or Aiden in Wonderland; Patrick Staff: Weed Killer; Arjuna Neuman & Denise Ferreira da Silva: 4 Waters. Based on Marie’s own personal interest and curiosity in art, the podcast will have a curious - and perhaps sometimes naive approach to the artists and topics dealt with, thus opening up to the listener the person behind the artist, the ideas behind the gallery, the art fair etc.
